Scanning the banks of monitors here in our global strategic control bunker it looks as though we might have made it into Y2K. There seems to be no signs of that so-called millennium bug, in fact all we can pick up on our monitors, silhouetted in the first rays of the new dawn, is the sight of on-call I.T. contractors laughing all the way to the bank.
Our most confusing images of the night came from, of all places, Manger Square in Bethlehem where they chose to ring in the year 2000 with the theme from 2001. There appears to be no truth to the rumour that fundamentalist Christians insisted on playing the record in an attempt to speed up the rapture.
Also coming in is news from Japan that a couple of nuclear reactors have had problems with their monitoring systems. Fortunately there was a crack team of P.R. consultants on standby ready to deal with just such an incident. They have assured us there’s absolutely nothing to be worried about.
Whatever happens, we’re not opening the hatch yet.
