PhotoSynth is an innovative spatial interface for navigating online images. The software analyses and indexes images from the web and identifies the subject and by extrapolation, the photographers camera position. This spatial data allows the PhotoSynth software to render those images in a three dimensional environment. This allows the user to navigate in three dimensions around the location of their original photograph. By virtually joining related images you can take a tour, go round corners, zoom in on details etc.
Although the LiveLabs site and its funky presentation are a little too close to Adobe/Google/Apple to be coincidence, it's good to see something genuinely innovative coming out of Microsoft for a change. This combination of search and navigation is going to be very powerful.
